Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Applying for financial aid almost always begins with completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). When students submit the FAFSA, they are applying for federal financial aid including grants, work-study funding, and loans.
Students and parents of students need to create an FSA ID and password with the U.S. Department of Education in order to apply online. Keep your FSA ID somewhere safe because you'll not only use it to sign for loans, you will need it to apply for aid the entire time you are enrolled in classes.
The U.S. Federal Department of Education uses the information students, parents of students, and/or spouses of students provide on the FAFSA to determine the students' eligibility for federal financial aid. Many states, including Kansas, also use the FAFSA to determine your eligibility for state financial aid programs.
Newman’s priority date to complete and submit the FAFSA is December 1 prior to the following academic year. For example, if a student plans to attend Newman during the 2017-2018 academic year, he or she should complete the FAFSA by December 1, 2016 to meet the Newman’s FAFSA priority date.
The results of a student's FAFSA are electronically sent to Newman University when our Federal School Code of 001939 is included.
Completion of the federal verification process ensures that the information students and their families reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is accurate. As part of this process, Newman’s Financial Aid Office may ask the student and his or her family to provide additional information. Individuals are typically selected for verification by the federal processor of the FAFSA. Newman’s Financial Aid Office also reserves the right to select individuals for the verification process under certain conditions. Federal regulations do not allow students to avoid verification by simply choosing not to accept offered need-based federal financial aid, such as a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan.
If applicants are selected to complete the federal verification process, Newman’s Financial Aid Office will inform students of the necessary documentation required. The required documentation will be mailed to new and returning students. Subsequent notifications will happen by email. Returning students may also see a list on JetStream. Required verification documentation will vary depending upon the unique information provided on the student's FAFSA.
IRS Data Retrieval Tool
IRS Data Retrieval Tool simplifies the federal verification process
The U.S. Department of Education highly encourages all FAFSA applicants to utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRSDRT) that is available within the FAFSA online application. The IRSDRT allows students and parents, who have already submitted their federal tax returns to electronically transfer their tax information from the IRS to their FAFSA. If students and/or parents utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool without making any changes, the amount of documentation requested for the verification process by the Financial Aid Office may be minimized.
